For Her
You want to make sure you are feeling comfortable while staying in the hospital, so the list may be different for everybody but these are the most needed things from my experience:
- Pillow
- Cozy socks
- Toiletries (shampoo, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, lotion and everything else you might need to take a shower)
- Towel
- Slippers
- Flip flops (I used them to a take shower)
- Going home outfit – make sure it is something very comfortable.
For Him
Hospitals are known not to have the most comfortable stay at the hospital when it comes for fathers, so I put together a list of items to have in Dad’s hospital bag.
- Pillow
- Blanket
- Towel, soap and shampoo (if you are planing to take a shower)
- A fresh pair of:
- underwear
- socks
- pants (take comfortable pants instead of jeans)
- Snacks (it is nice to have something to munch on because you never know how long it will take to deliver he baby)
For Baby
When it comes for the newborn, you need to really think it through and take everything you will need once the baby comes and you will then have to take him or her home, luckily I have went trough it and will be able to help you with that, you cannot rely on the hospital to provide you with everything you need, although they will give you some stuff when you leave, it depends on the hospital.
- First things first, carseat! Install it in the car a month before you are due, you never know when the day will come, it may be earlier than scheduled due date, and you really don’t want to start installing on the day you have to go to the hospital for delivery. Make sure it is installed correctly and you know how to buckle up the baby when the time comes to take him or her home (I strongly suggest to carefully read carseat manufacturer instructions on the operation and installation)
- Going home outfit – this is usually the only thing you need for the baby. You may pack a diaper bag (visit my blog post on the Diaper Bag Essentials, I have covered everything you will need) but from my experience the hospital usually provides all the essentials.
- Light and breathable muslim blanket – something very light and breathable that you can put over the carseat while walking to the car outside, especially if it’s windy or too sunny
A small tip * – do not feed the baby right before you get into the car, the motion of the car may get the baby sick when driving for the first time, I would say have a feeding half an hour before you head out, that way the baby will be happy and should sleep the whole time in the car.
